What are conjuctions ?

Conjunctions are words that connect other words, phrases, and clauses in a sentence.  Without conjunction we could not make a good sentences.

Conjunction is word like these : and, but, for, yet, so as, how, if until, when. 


Conjunctions connects words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. They help make sentences smoother and more logical. There are three main types of conjunctions:


1. Coordinating Conjunctions (F-A-N-B-O-Y-S)


These join words, phrases, or independent clauses of equal importance.

For (reason) → I stayed home, for I was feeling sick.

And (addition) → She bought apples and oranges.

Nor (negative alternative) → He doesn’t like coffee, nor does he drink tea.

But (contrast) → I wanted to go, but I was too tired.

Or (choice) → Do you want tea or coffee?

Yet (contrast) → It was late, yet he kept working.

So (result) → It rained, so we stayed inside.

2. Subordinating Conjunctions


These connect an independent clause with a dependent clause, showing cause, time, condition, contrast, etc.

Cause/Reason → Because, since, as → She left early because she was tired.

Time → When, while, before, after, until → I’ll call you when I arrive.

Condition → If, unless, provided that → You can go if you finish your homework.

Contrast → Although, though, even though → Although it was raining, they went out.

Purpose → So that, in order that → He spoke loudly so that everyone could hear.

3. Correlative Conjunctions


These work in pairs to connect similar elements in a sentence.

Both…and → She is both smart and kind.

Either…or → You can have either cake or ice cream.

Neither…nor → He is neither rich nor famous.

Not only…but also → She is not only intelligent but also hardworking.

Whether…or → I don’t know whether to stay or leave.
